The Sweet Far Thing By Libba Bray (book review)

I'm feeling a bit lazy... and most people have probably heard of this book. If you haven't here is the product description I pasted here off Amazon (no copywrite infringement intended):

"IT HAS BEEN A YEAR OF CHANGE since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father alaudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds. The Order - the mysterious group her mother was once part of - is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence's burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for. "

---------------

now for my (quick) thoughts:

Rating: errrr 3.75 stars

Genre: Historical fiction, ya lit

Okay so I absolutely loved A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels. Libba Bray did not dissapoint. She writes her magic into this book. I did find however, that it was extremely long, and I was relieved when I had finished it. There is no doubt it was a good book though. Fans of this trilogy best check it out asap!
Sorry for this quick review.

Despite the length, this book was actually my favourite of the three.

glad when it was over?? ARE YOU CRAZY?? I was so disappointed. It's the last one. It's over. The series is gone. HE'S gone.

It was my favorite. And it was the funniest. It was spectacular.

I can't believe you said that...wow. I loved the fact that it was long, that meant it lasted longer. It was like reading a Harry Potter book (no, I'm not comparing The Sweet Far Thing to Harry Potter, I'm just saying I enjoy the length of both).

Sorry for the ranting, it's just not everyday you find someone relieved when a book that good is over.

*Heather
once again, sorry about the ranting.

I think these books are absolutley amazing. They are written incredibly, when ever I read one I don't get any sleep. An threatening scariness is woven perfectly in and hidden by the sweet demenour of the relams that leaves me with nightmares. I love how in the end the girls get their freedom, and how the issue of sexism was perfectly protrayed in the desperation of these girls who are forced into their lives like they are forced into too tight corsets. The ending was sad, but i think necessary. Could gemma and katrik ever have found peace, and if so don't you think without the tension their relationship would be boring. I could'nt see Gemma making tea while katrik read the paper. I agree they might have been long, and some parts become boring and you overlook them. All together though, these books are some of the best.

I think the book was good, but I'm very disapointed of how things turned out between Gemma and Kartik, I don''t think it's the apropriate ending, I have projected alternate endings in my mind, that help me cope with the sorrow I feel at the moment, lol.
I love the way it's written and love the other two books as well, but I disagree completly with what happens.

I agree about the importance of the freedom and sexism issues portrayed in the book, but I can't help asking myself, why is Felicity so happy and Gemma so sad? They sufferd the same kind of loss, and yet Gemma is the one in mourning, I don't understand the development of the events.
